Blue (curacao) Seafoam

This Blue Curacao cocktail is an interesting meld of flavors. The Blue Seafoam cocktail (pg. 128 Sandra Lee semi-homemade Cocktail Time) mixes blueberry flavors with blue curacao liquor. The blue curacao, which is distilled and flavored from the dried peel of bitter oranges, keeps this cocktail from being overly sweet.
And it makes a really pretty drink. I may have added a BIG splash of blue curacao – the deepness of the blue color of your cocktail will depend on your definition of a ‘splash’.

Blue Seafoam

Makes 1 drink

  • 3/4 oz. blueberry flavored vodka, Smirnoff
  • 3/4 oz. vanilla flavored vodka, Smirnoff
  • 1 splash blue curacao
  • fresh blueberries ( I used frozen)

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add blueberry vodka, vanilla vodka, and curacao: shake well. Pour into a chilled glass. Garnish with blueberries. (I also added a sugar rimmer).

This was a perfect cocktail at home prior to going out to local theater. Which I must say, if you ever get a chance to see a production of Moon over Buffalo – definitely go. This play is beyond hilarious. And local theater is amazing. It’s usually in a small theater, so you always get a good seat for a good price. And the talent is very good. And very enthusiastic. And, you can get a student discount (this theater gave me 1/2 off!) – so yes, it did pay to take a semester of Japanese that I never had time to pursue afterwords.

OK, rating time. Do I give the Blue Seafoam cocktail a Semi-HomeTested rating of LUSH IT, LUSH IT A LOT, or LEAVE IT?
This is a refreshing, pretty, summer cocktail and gets a Semi-HomeTested rating of LUSH IT.

Kampai!

America Gives

America is a generous country. I personally have many friends who give of their time and money to causes either directly or through their faith connections (church, synagogue, etc.)

Yes, the big donations get big press. That’s OK with me. I think it’s wonderful.  According to reports from the Associated Press and GoodNewsNetwork “More than three dozen of the wealthiest families and individuals in the United States have committed to giving away the majority of their wealth to charitable causes, since the “Giving Pledge” was launched by fellow billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett six weeks ago.”  So,

HUMP DAY KUDOS TO YOU

BILLIONAIRES OF AMERICA!

RHONJ Teresa Spends

Teresa created an amazing event. Again. This time for Audriana’s baby christening. 1/2 the show was devoted to this lavish event, and showed poor Joe super stressing out. Has he always been that grouchy and we never saw him much on the show? More likely, he is reacting to the fact that Teresa and Joe are bankrupt. How can they continue to spend money like this??? Who knows – maybe someone else paid for it. Joe seemed ready to implode all over Teresa, and she in Teresa fashion, just laughed and treated him like a smudge on her mirror.

Meanwhile, DINA WAS BACK!!! Yeah! It was so good to see her back on last night’s episode as Audriana’s godmother. I really hope they boot Danielle out and bring Dina back. Like I said before, cattiness is entertaining; thug watching is NOT.

And speaking of Danielle – the ugliness continues. I feel really bad for her kids. You can’t help but notice the comment her daughter made in the restaurant when Danielle got crazy about Teresa again “just another family dinner”.

How obviously over the top was Kim G. in her screeching fit against Danielle? BRAVO TV – please drop Danielle from the show and DO NOT SIGN UP Kim G. Bethenny was right on “Watch What Happens” that Kim G. is like a termite that worked her way into the show. Andy Cohen – deal with this mess! Thank-you!

So, same old, same old. If you’d like to try something different, try the Cranberry Margarita (pg. 112 Sandra Lee semi-homemade Cocktail Time)

And tell me what you think of the RHONJ mess.

Cranberry Margarita

Cranberry Margarita. Perfectly tart. This cocktail (pg. 112 Sandra Lee semi-homemade Cocktail Time)  had just the right taste of fresh cranberry.  Of course I had to go to 3 different grocery stores to find the whole cranberry sauce needed for this cocktail recipe. Maybe this Cranberry Margarita should have been included in the November section of  the Sandra Lee Cocktail Time book.

And then off I go to the liquor store (again) for the Grand Marnier for this cocktail and some wine for my cocktail party/book review night with the girls.  I put a couple bottles of mid price wines in my cart and then I come across a wine from Africa.  The store wine ‘expert’ doesn’t remember what this wine tastes like, so I ask her if  she remembers if she spit it out. No?  OK, then I’ll take 3 bottles.  I know this is no way to select wine, but it’s got a great label and the book we’re discussing this month talks a lot about Africa, so whatever.  Click here for the book review of Half the Sky.

Now I get to the register and the cashier asks me for my ID!  Good thing I did not look excited or even smile, because in an instant, I realize she just wants to check my ID against my AMEX.  Again, whatever.

Back to the Cranberry Margarita.  It really was delicious.  Here is the recipe, compliments of Sandra Lee:

Cranberry Margarita

makes 1 drink

  • 1/4 cup whole cranberry sauce
  • 1 1/2 oz cranberry juice (I used diet of course)
  • 1 oz. tequila – Jose Cuervo
  • 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier
  • 10 ice cubes

In a blender, combine all ingredients.  Cover and blend on high until slushy.  Pour into glass and garnish.

TIP: I quadrupled the recipe, stored it in the fridge, and later made it in my Margaritaville machine.  Makes it very easy for a crowd.
