What is A Semi-HomeTested Cocktail?
It just happened. I was in Costcos looking at books. This is my favorite part of the store – after all it is waaaay more fun than choosing which oversized vat of laundry detergent to heave into my cart.
So, I’ve got all the novels I can handle for the next 6 months, and I head to the cookbooks section. Ahhhh, Sandra Lee – stacks and stacks of her Semi-Homemade cookbooks – and I’m thinking I really like her irreverent style but honestly when I cook, I prefer to use fresh ingredients, not prepackaged. BUT, the bright colors continue to get my attention, and then I see IT. Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Cocktail Time; page after page of refreshing, mouthwatering beautiful cocktails. Who wouldn’t want to create drinks like that for their friends? You know us gals always have some event we’re going to. Or hosting. Birthday lunches, girls’ night out, book clubs, bunko, brunches, watching the latest episode of The Real Housewives of Anywhere, and don’t forget Showers, always Showers. And don’t we like to be the one who brings that something special to the party (besides our awesome self of course)?
Now I’m looking through this cocktail book for the umpteenth time, trying to decide which luscious cocktail to create first, and I get the brilliant idea- why not make all of them? Terrific, but where to start? Well, thank goodness the book is broken down by month or I would never be able to choose just one to try first.
So I am embarking on a year long Cocktail Party, starting with April – woo hoo!!! And I hope you’ll join me.
Each week, I will try several new cocktail recipes from Sandra Lee’s Semi-Homemade cocktail book (I’ll note the name and page so you can play too) and will rate them as ‘Lush it’, ‘Lush it a Lot‘, or ‘Leave it’ – though how any of them could be bad, I just can’t imagine. Well, we’ll see. Go ahead and browse through the Semi-HomeTested Cocktails now.
And because I do like to talk and share gossip, (yes I did say gossip and no, this does not make me a bad person- most people call it ‘dishing’) many people and topics will be discussed. And don’t expect me to know everyone I will dish about – Thursdays will be devoted to obsessing over The Real Housewives of Anywhere and Wednesdays will be my Hump Day Kudos.
Oh, one more thing. No Two. First, I may choose to use a different brand of alcohol than is prescribed in Sandra Lee’s recipes (YEAHHHHH!!, I just got Sandra’s permission to reproduce the recipes here — ) but I will tell you when I do that. Hence this is my Semi-HomeTested Cocktail blog. Don’t worry – I am a top shelf kind of gal. Get over it.
Second, on occasion, I am inspired to create delicious, lip smacking, Original Cocktail Recipes (aka Semi-HomeTested Originals) my self – so you have that to look forward to.
Third – and I know I said two – but the mind wants to go where the mind wants to go. Sandra Lee has a lovely ‘forward?’ where she explains that her book is about ‘Cocktailing for a Cause’ and she encourages everyone to use her recipes and host a special fundraising ‘cocktail time’ party with friends and family and donate the proceeds to a charity. Hmmm…let’s think about this… I do like the idea. Very much. Let’s see where this blog takes us and definitely keep that in mind.
OK. Hopefully I won’t spend the next year just talking to myself in this blog. Hopefully many new friends will join in my adventure. Either way, I know I will have a great time.
Salude! And remember, please drink responsibly!

UPDATE: After sharing my blog with you for a couple of months, I have decided to invite you all to my monthly Book Review/Cocktail Party.
I really hope you’ll join me for that and share your thoughts on the selected book of the month.

Hey because of your blog I went and bought one of the Sandra Lee’s magazines. I tried to find the same book at Costco’s but there were none to be found.
Ava,
Thank you for checking out my blog. You can find Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Cocktail Time book at Amazon.com for about $10.50 (at least as of today).

hey girl, this blog site is one I will definately be checking out often. Sandra Lee has great ideas for cocktails. Do you have any tips for making a better Pina Colada?
I’m so glad you joined my year long cocktail party! hmmm… tips for Pina Coladas…… Amazingly enough, the May cocktails feature a Coconut Colada, which I will be semi-hometesting this week, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, my very BEST tip is: Play the Pina Colada song (actually called ‘Escape’ by Rupert Holmes, while you make your Pina Colada and SHAKE YOUR COLADA TO THE BEAT!
Look forward to your amazing coconut colada idea. where can I find the song escape by rupert holmes?
I use Itunes. or you can enjoy it here click here and sing along.
I fell asleep before Housewives came on last night, now I have to wait till Saturday, to see a rerun.
First-Don’t forget about the Jersey Housewives tonight, second, can I man the blender?
First, I will have to record this and watch it later tonight – which I will definitely stay up to do. And 2nd – ok, but don’t knock anyone out!!!
Because of your blog, I looked up Sandra Lee.
Welcome to my blog-tails! I read Sandra Lee’s memoir about 2 years ago. She’s one tough lady with a fun outlook on life.
